Hallo zusammen,
Was meint Ihr dazu?
"Staff grilled, Qatar Airways warns of pullout
Dikshya ThakuriKathmandu, March 13:
Stung by the recent detention and interrogation of a few of its staffers by the Department of Labour, the Qatar Airways today said it may be forced to rethink its strategies for Nepal and even end its operations here. The airline’s senior operations manager for the region, Ali Alrais, also said
the airline was unfairly dragged into a controversy over its recruitment of Nepalis for the airline’s operations in Doha.
“The airline is planning to rethink its strategies which means considering pulling out of Nepal,” said Alrais. The airline has now cancelled recruitment of 1,150 candidates for different levels, including 50 crew members. “We will no longer hire Nepali candidates after being subjected to ill treatment by the Nepali authorities. We don’t want to come where we are not wanted,” he said.
The police had, on Thursday, detained Qatar Airways officials, including its Area Manager Gyan Amerasinghe, while they were interviewing candidates at Astoria Hotel in Lazimpat. Reena Sen, Amerasinghe’s secretary, was called to Kamalpokhari police station where the Qatar officials were being held. They were detained in Singhadurbar Police Station the same day.
Amerasinghe, Sen and one more staffer of the airline, Rajani Shrestha, are still being interrogated, said a Qatar Airways source. The airline officials have been accused of illegally
recruiting candidates through under-the-table deals, he said, stating that he was not aware of such practices by the airline.
The police had handed over the Qatar Airways officials to the Department of Labour after taking them in custody on Thursday. Three foreign staffers who came to Nepal to take the interview were given a clean chit. They flew back to Doha today. Those based in Kathmandu continue to do their rounds at the Department.
Qatar Airways managed to get a clean chit for the airline’s three foreign nationals at the initiation of Foreign Minister Ramesh Nath Pandey, said Alfrais. The Department of Labour returned to them the passports the department had confiscated from them.
“We are currently interrogating Qatar Airways officials for their involvement in illegal foreign employment since the legal provisions do not allow any organisation to recruit individuals without seeking the Ministry of Labour’s permission,” Dhrub Sharma, spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, told this daily. Foreign organisations are required to hire Nepalis through accredited local manpower agencies, according to him.
If found guilty of violating the law, the Ministry will move the court, he said. However, he declined to comment on clearance of foreign nationals."
