Steps to attract high-end tourists

Shimla, March 25
The Himachal Government has created the necessary infrastructure to attract high-end tourists.
Stating this while presiding over a meeting of Board of Directors of the State Tourism Development Corporation here yesterday, Mr Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, said already a network of helipads had been developed.
The state was negotiating with private airlines to provide concessional air tickets to Shimla, Kangra, and Kulu airports, besides operating flights on a daily basis to major destinations round the year.
He said this would help in bringing about qualitative improvement in the tourism culture. Expansion work on all three airports was in progress to facilitate landing of big aircraft.
Mr Virbhadra Singh stressed the need to bring professionalism in services by providing regular training to staff in all hospitality services. He said tribal tourism was being given a boost by creating the necessary infrastructure in tribal areas. He said HPTDC units were coming up at Kaza and Kalpa while at Keylong a splendid unit was already in place.
Mr G.S. Bali, Transport and Tourism Minister, who is also Vice-Chairman of the HPTDC, said the rationalisation process was under active consideration of the corporation so that adequate functional staff was posted at all units of the corporation. He also said the Government of India would set up world-class tourist information centres. It was decided at the meeting to pay arrears of dearness allowance to employees of the corporation for the period of July, 2003 to June, 2004, in a phased manner and engage consultants and architects for renovation of HPTDC units.

State Government would explore the possibilities of creating necessary infrastructure to attract high paying tourists by bringing about necessary changes in the prevailing tourism structure.
This was revealed by Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, while presiding over the 112th Meeting of the Board of Directors of the HP Tourism Development Corporation here today.
Chief Minister said that the State Government had created a large network of helipads all over the state which were required to be utilised fully for the visitors, especially those high spending.
He said that required infrastructure needed to be created at all places of tourist importance so that tourism industry could flourish benefiting people living in rural areas of the state.
Virbhadra Singh said that the State Government was negotiating with private airlines to provide concessional air tickets in their flights to all the three Shimla, Kangra and Kullu airports to the passengers besides operating daily flights to the major destinations round the year.
He said that it would help in bringing about qualitative improvement in the tourism culture in the State and the people who could afford would to visit destinations of their choice by saving journey time.
He said that expansion work of all the three airports was in progress and would be capable of permitting landing of bigger capacity aircrafts thereby giving boost to the high paying tourism in the State.
Virbhadra Singh stressed upon the need for bringing about high professionalism in the services of HPTDC and providing staff regular training in all the hospitality services in best of the training centres of the industry so that they could serve the guests to their units in a highly professional way.
He said that tribal tourism was being given boost by creating necessary infrastructure in tribal areas. He said that HPTDC units were coming up at Kaza and Kalpa while at Keylong a splended unit had come up.
He said that the tribal areas had vast potential for the enthusiastic tourists which needed to be exploited for the benefit of the tourism industry. He said that efficiency and promptness in delivering the best of the hospitality services were the prerequisite for any tourism industry which needed to be adhered to.
He also said that more tourism promotion avenues should be explored for boosting tourism activities in the State.
Chief Minister said that the State had best of the natural wealth which needed to be exploited for tourism promotion with environmental safeguards. He said that the tourism industry had vast self employment avenues which would benefit the unemployed youth immensely. He said that unproductive expenditure needed to be checked immediately and transparency maintained in entire functioning of the Corporation.
G.S.Bali, Transport add Tourism Minister, who is also the Vice Chairman of the HPTDC informed the BOD that rationalization process was under active consideration of the Corporation so that adequate functional staff was posted in all the Units of the Corporation for their smooth functioning.
He also informed that the Government of India would be funding the world class tourist information centres being constructed in the State which would add to the tourism facilities to a larger extent.
It was approved in the meeting to pay DA arrears to the employees of the HPTDC for the period of July, 2003 to June, 2004 in a phased manner. Engage the services of best of the consultants and architecture for the renovation of the HPTDC units all over the State and requisition services of best of the chartered accountant for auditing the accounts of the Corporation to ensure transparency in the functioning.
Ashok Thakur, Principal Secretary, Tourism, apprised the Chief Minister about the new innovations being adopted by the HPTDC for bringing about professional approach in its functioning.
Tarun Sridhar, Managing Director, HPTDC welcomed the Chief Minister and apprised him of activities of the Corporation. .
Besides the Members of the Board of Director of HPTDC, S.S.Parmar, Chief Secretary, Yogesh Khanna, Additional Chief Secretary attended the meeting.
