I was in the Kailash area for more than 2 weeks in the late Mav early June now.
Here are a few impressions:
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#there are no signs/marks of any road projekt around Mount Kailash
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#the information I could gather in Darchen, the village at the south feet of Mt Kailash, say that the local/regional executive of the party who had this project in mind has been downgraded and has other functions now.
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#The decision to cancel the project has been essentially influenced at a high military level by peoplewho are bouddhists and opposed the projekt of a road
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#A new road hsa been built between the nextclosed checkpoint to Darchen (coming from Lhasa) to Darchen (=a few kilometers) and will be extended to the West to Ali (Shiquanhe)
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#A new road is beeing built between Purang (Taklakot) at the chinese-nepali boarder south of Mt. Kailash up north to the road I just mentioned (= hugeproject combined with electrification + fix phone lines)
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#Darchen, the village at the feet ot Mt. Kailash, (as many other cities and villages I saw) is becoming more and more a chinese place (restaurants, shops, guesthouses, etc.) wheras the tibetan population lives in the east of the village in a neglected area
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#More and ¤*#more cities in southwest Tibet are equiped by China Telecom with mobile telephony. I could even see new infrastructures in small villages with a few party members and military people only as customers of China Telecom but there is still no infrastrcture for mobile telephony between towns and villages
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#Everywhere I went, I noticed that Tibetians continue to practice their religion without any noticeable restrictions
- ¤*# ¤*# ¤*#The monasteries around Lake Manasarovar and Mt. Kailash are all occupied by Tibetian monks (although by only a handful).
