Hi Steve,
thanks for this site !
Got homesick, when looking at your pictures of Cerro Castillo. When have you been there ?
We had the most spectacular experience there, at Laguna Cerro Castillo - full moon rose exactly behind the outcrop seen on your picture "view-back-to-pass".

Question: what you describe as El Bolson Circuito Azul - this isn't Lago Puelo ? I am planning my next Patagonia visit in november / december and would like to stay more in Central Patagonia, Parque Pumalin and region between Esquel and El Bolson. The trip you describe looks fabulous, the refugio as well :)
Could we stay in e-mail contact ?
Thanks in advance
Ingrid

Ingrid

hola Ingrid

thanks for the compliment. One day, I hope we can scan more pics and have a really nice selection.

The lakes you see in the El Bolson photogallery are the lakes close too and behind the Refugio Las Lagunitas. El Bolson is nice and much more relaxed and low profile than Bariloche although many local people told me the village is much visited in Jan-Feb. I was there mid march.

The trek is described in Lonely Planet. The trailhead is a bit difficult to find and not possible to reach via public transport but I walked an hour or so from the cabeza del Indio following the rio azul. from the trailhead (excellent hanging bridge above the rio azul) the trail is easy to follow. It takes around 4 days. The lakes behind refugio Lagunitas are a bit more difficult to reach but also sporadically marked. lago puelo is also nice with frequent and cheap buses the whole day doing the shuttle. Camping Aldea Suiza has excellent infrastructure and real swiss tarte and kuche. the owner Miguel has lots of information about trekking and climbing in the area and has been himself climbing a lot (eg Cerro Torre). You will also find map and other information in local mountaineering club andino piltriquitron. Sleeping and eating in the refugios is not expensive. some also let you cook your own food.

The bivouac behind ref lagunitas is definitely not waterproof ;-( got a brand new down sleeping bag soaked during a nightly unwetter with heavy rain. The trail to the other lakes behind this refugio goes sometimes in the small river and through masses of very high and very dense bamboo.

Enjoy your trip. plenty of great treks out there

you can mail me but we leave tomorrow for China, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tibet so will be longtime offline. sherpalito at yahoo.co.uk

suerte!

Hi Steve,
thanks for all those excellent tips. They sound exactly as what I am looking for.
Yes, Bariloche is something what I definitely will avoid.
Ok, I am used to not-really-marked ways in Patagonia (and this is exactly why I like this part of the planet).

Lots of fun, wonderful experiences and good luck for your Asia trip.
yours Ingrid

PS: and of course, I am looking forward to the pictures after your returning
