Rebel leaders go underground, close down contact office
The sudden closure of Maoist contact office in Kathmandu and fresh attack at Police post in Sugauli Custom office of Parsa districts looting around a dozen of weapons sparks Maoist real motives. This was the first incident of attacking police post after the ceasefire announcement.
"We are shocked,” communication Minister Mr. Kamal Thapa said reacting to the closure of the Maoist contact office in Kathmandu. "This incident has come to us as a surprise. We were engaged in preparation for the third round of peace talks," Thapa said.
Earlier today, Maoist leader Bharat Dhungana, in a press statement, complained that he failed to receive reliable assurance from ministers Thapa and Lohani. "I could not get reliable assurance even after my repeated calls to the ministers," Dhungana said in a tatement, ‘justifying’ the closure of the office. "The conduct of the government has compelled us to suspect its motives." "The round-the-clock surveillance placed by the security forces has created an uncomfortable atmosphere for the chief negotiator Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai and others to remain in the public eye."
The government today assured full security of the Maoist negotiating team and promised ‘safe passage’ in the event of the peace talks failing. Thapa added that the government has urged the Maoist side to sit for talks at the earliest, as the present misunderstandings would come to an end with the resumption of talks. The government officially called the Maoists for the third round of talks last week, following a series of informal talks between the two sides. The Maoist side is yet to respond to the government’s formal invitation letter.
